"No active license detected" warning

If you encounter an issue where the SoundID Reference notifies you about "No active license detected", this guide provides steps on how to resolve the issue.

In this article:

No active license detected after opening SoundID Reference

We are aware of some users encountering a 'No active license detected' error message in the SoundID Reference standalone app or the DAW plugin. This message may show even if the license is activated on your current device.

Note: When following the below resolution steps, back up your speaker profiles beforehand. We are aware of an issue where some users are experiencing the profiles going missing after logging in after computer reboot. [MAC] Missing speaker profiles: "File not found"

Resolution

To resolve the error message, please follow these steps:

  1. Delete the user.json and license.json files from your computer:

    Windows: C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Sonarworks\SoundID Reference
    macOS: /Macintosh HD/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/Sonarworks/SoundID Reference

    Screenshot_2022-09-19_at_15.56.46.pngDisclaimer: The files in the directory are hidden by default, make sure to enable hidden files

  2. Log into your Sonarworks Account;
  3. Click on 'Manage' below the license key;
  4. Click on 'Deactivate' your machine and deactivate the device;
  5. Click on 'Activate on this device'. This should reactivate the license on your machine.

Note [macOS]: since version 5.4.0 (Oct 18, 2022) the "Sonarworks" folder has been moved from ~/Library/Sonarworks to ~/Library/Application Support/Sonarworks

Can't you just like make the software better so that it doesn't forget I have a working license and make me sign in and reload the calibration profiles on a weekly basis?

Hi Taneli Tulkki, thanks for your comment! I'm sorry to hear you are encountering some issues with this!

Are you encountering this issue on computer startup or can it happen more randomly when launching the app?

Based on your comment, the issue also sounds somewhat similar to a [MAC] Missing speaker profiles: "File not found" issue we are aware of. There have been user reports where they are logged out from the app upon computer startup and notice their presets and profiles missing. Can you let me know if your profiles go missing after you encounter this problem?

Best regards,
Zane

The above-mentioned file path doesn't exist in OSX Sonoma in 2024. Really disappointing that a software company can't properly manage licensing for a product that's already been activated and working for weeks. And I'm clearly not the only one experiencing this issue. I'm less confident in my ability to mix accurately because I need to constantly check if my correction is actually working or if it's been disabled without even a notification due to a licensing issue.
