Where can I find my speaker profile?

Locating your speaker calibration files, backing them up, and transferring them to a different computer.

In this article:

Speaker profiles (.swproj calibration files)

Speaker profiles are created by measuring the frequency response of your speakers and room using a measurement microphone and the SoundID Reference Measure app. By default, they are saved as .swproj files in the Sonarworks Projects folder, unless a custom location was assigned by the user when saving the created profile.

The .swproj files are not encrypted, so they can be freely copied, backed up, moved to other directories, and transferred to other computers; and they are cross-compatible between macOS and Windows.

Note: There are no pre-made speaker profiles available in the SoundID Reference software, as the frequency response is unique to the room properties and speaker placement in the room. If you haven't measured your speakers before, follow this guide: Setting up with SoundID Reference speaker calibration

The quickest and easiest way to access the Sonarworks Projects folder is by launching the SoundID Reference standalone app or DAW plugin, and clicking on the 'Open an existing profile' option in the calibration profile selection dropdown menu.

Alternatively, you can navigate to these directories manually:

macOS

Macintosh HD/Users/your_username/Library/Application Support/Sonarworks/SoundID Reference/Sonarworks Projects

Windows

C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Sonarworks\SoundID Reference\Sonarworks Projects

Note: The User/Library and user\AppData folders on macOS and Windows are hidden by default. To enable showing hidden files and folders, follow the instructions here: How to show hidden files on macOS and Windows?

Sonarworks Projects folder legacy directories

SoundID Reference legacy directories

The Sonarworks Project folder directory changed on macOS with the SoundID Reference 5.4 update (released on Oct 18, 2022): the entire "Sonarworks" folder with all of its contents (including Sonarworks Projects) was moved from ~/Library/Sonarworks to ~/Library/Application Support/Sonarworks

If you are updating from a pre-5.4 Legacy version of SoundID Reference to a newer/latest version, the entire Sonarworks folder (including the Sonarworks Projects folder with its contents) is copied over to the new directory under Application Support automatically, so there are no migration issues expected. However, if something has gone wrong for any reason, the legacy directory is another place to look for your profiles.

Note: If all of your needed calibration files are present in the current location under Application Support, then the entire legacy "Sonarworks" folder can be deleted for cleanup purposes (keeping in mind that other Sonarworks legacy product files might be installed in this location, such as Reference 3 or Reference 4).

Note: The User/Library directory on macOS is hidden by default. Use the Command + Shift + "." (dot) key command in Finder to show hidden files, or follow the directions here: How to show hidden files Mac and Windows?

Reference 4 legacy directories

The Sonarworks Projects folder employs a legacy directory for older Reference products, such as Reference 3 and Reference 4. If you are updating from the Reference 3 or Reference 4 to SoundID Reference, the entire Sonarworks folder (including the Sonarworks Projects folder with its contents) is copied over to the new directory under Application Support automatically, so there are no migration issues expected. However, if something has gone wrong for any reason, this legacy directory is another place to look for your profiles.

The easiest way to open the Sonarworks Projects folder for Reference 4 is by launching the Reference 4 Systemwide app or DAW plugin, and clicking on 'Open profile'.
