Removing the Reference 4 driver & plugins

Reference 4 will install components such as the HAL driver for the Systemwide app, and 3 different plugin formats: AU, AAX, and VST. These are all located in the Audio/Plugins directory, and can be deleted manually by navigating to the locations shown below:

Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/Sonarworks Reference 4 plugin.component
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Avid/Audio/Plug-Ins/Sonarworks Reference 4 plugin.aaxplugin

Removing the Sonarworks folder (user data and profiles)

Reference 4 software also stores files such as calibration profiles, log files, settings data, license information, and other data. This data is stored in the Sonarworks folder and can be deleted by navigating to the directory shown below.

Keep in mind that this will delete all your user data, including any speaker profiles you've created. If you wish to back up your profiles, you can simply copy them from the location shown here: Where can I find my speaker profile?

The Sonarworks folder is located in this directory:

Macintosh HD/Users/Username/Library/Sonarworks

NOTE! The User/Library directory is hidden by default. Use the Cmd + Shift + . (dot) keyboard command to reveal hidden items in Finder, or see detailed instructions here: How to show hidden files Mac and Windows?

Removing the Systemwide driver manually via Terminal

In some cases, after an unsuccessful uninstall attempt, the Systemwide app can still be present and listed as an available audio device in Sound Settings/Audio MIDI Setup. If this is the case, launch the Terminal app (use Cmd+Space to search for it, or locate in Launchpad). Then enter (copy-paste) the following commands into the Terminal window one by one, and hit the Enter key to execute each command. After executing the commands, reboot your Mac to complete the process:

For versions 4.4.7 (or higher):

  • sudo rm -fr /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/SonarworksSystemwide.driver

For versions 4.4.6 (or lower):

  • sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/Sonarworks.kext
  • sudo rm -r /System/Library/Extensions/Sonarworks.kext
